Is DirecTV Stream the same as DirecTV?
Not entirely. However, DirecTV Stream and DirecTV are very similar in the services they offer. But as mentioned, DirecTV is a satellite TV provider while DirecTV Stream is a live TV streaming service via the internet.
You could say DirecTV Stream is a streaming version of DirecTV with both services have their pros and cons.
One of the advantages of DirecTV Stream is no contract is required to start the service. However, DirecTV requires a contract commitment. If you don’t like contracts, DirecTV Stream is an ideal choice because you have the option to cancel your subscription anytime.
DirecTV has more regular and premium channels but the service may be more prone to price hikes. DirecTV requires a 2-year contract with a price hike in your second year as a subscriber. That is not the case with DirecTV Stream.

How Do I Get DirecTV Stream on my TV?
Once you have taken your DirecTV Stream device, power supply, HDMI cable, and remote out of the box:
- Connect HDMI cable and your device by plugging both ends into the tv and your device. Select and remember which HDMI input used.
- You have the option to use an Ethernet cable, otherwise you can just choose to connect to your home wifi.
- Next step is to insert the power cord into the back of the device and then plug it into a wall outlet. You should see a blinking red light on the front of the device.
- Turn on your TV, and in the Input or Source buttons on your remote, change it to the correct input.
- Lastly, you can now remove the battery tag from your DirecTV Stream remote.
How Do I Setup My DirecTV Streaming app?
You should see on-screen prompts after turning on your DirecTV Stream app. Follow as instructed:
- Start by pairing your DirecTV Stream remote to your device. You can do this by pointing the remote at your device and press the Fast Forward and Rewind buttons for about 2-3 seconds simultaneously. You’ll get a prompt message pairing is successful.
- Select and enter your home Wi-Fi network’s password. As soon as you are connected to the internet, your device may check for updates and initiate a reboot.
- Find your ID and/or password and enter them. Select Sign in.
- Review and accept the Terms & Conditions.
- You will be asked to enter the room location where you’ll use your DirecTv Stream device. Once selected, this will be set as your primary network.

How many streams do you get with DirecTV Stream?
Depending on the package chosen, you can enjoy up to three streams simultaneously on mobile or other streaming devices if you’re planning to do be away from your home network.
While it is really fun to have this perk, do not forget only 2 streaming devices connected to a TV can be accessed outside or far from home.
Just a tip, you may get error codes or something similar:
“10014-001: Looks like the maximum allowed number of streams are already playing. Close one of your other streams to play the one you want.”
“30001-018, 30002-019, or 30003-020: You have reached your streaming limit. Please close another stream or upgrade your subscription.”
It normally takes a few minutes to restart the program and watch another. If the issue persists, you may want to try:
- Close and restart the DirecTV Stream app.
- Look for app updates. If available, update your app and restart your device.
- Uninstall and reinstall the DirecTV Stream app.
- If applicable, restart your DIRECTV STREAM device.
Is DirecTV Stream on Roku?
DirecTV Stream is compatible with Roku. But unlike other streaming platforms you do need to go through a simple process of setting it up within the Roku network.
Make sure you have:
- Roku TVTM or compatible HDTV with an HDMI port
- Compatible Roku® device
- Wi-Fi® connection
- DirecTV Stream Account
- Roku remote or the Roku mobile app
- Roku account (in addition to your streaming account)

Does DirecTV Stream have local channels?
No matter which DirecTV Stream plan you choose, you’ll get to enjoy the same set of local channels. This includes CBS, NNC, FOX, ABC, The CW, Univision and Telemundo.
Local Channel Restrictions
Just remember you only have access to your home local channels when you are in your home market. Travelling to New York while residing in San Francisco will not let you stream your local channels in San Francisco, but you can watch the local channels of the market you are travelling to.
Does DirecTV Stream have a free trial?
Yes, DirecTV Stream gives you a 5-day free trial. Make sure to cancel your subscription ahead of the trial period, so you won’t be charged for the service. This trial period is applicable to any of the packages being offered by DirecTV Stream.
Is DirecTV Stream free for DirecTV customers?
DirecTV Stream is not free for DirecTV customers. DirecTV Stream is a streaming version of DirecTV. Since you do need to pay a monthly subscription for either service, you should decide which service best meets your needs.
Does DirecTV offer a senior discount?
Currently, DirecTV has no ongoing offer or discounts for seniors. What they promise to bring to their customers of all ages is a consistently reliable and high quality television service. Should I switch from DirecTV to DirecTV Stream?

Another reason to consider switching to DirecTV Stream is price. DirecTV cable charges close to double in the second year of your contract. Since DirecTV Stream is a new service, we don’t know what kind of future price hikes we may see. Right now, DirecTV Stream monthly bill is less than traditional cable.
Like other streaming services, DirecTV Stream has no long term contracts and allows you to cancel the service at any time. While there is a risk you will be charged an early termination fee if you cancel within 24 days of signing on for a special introductory offer.
Switching to DirecTV Stream could mean a better user experience and less hassles dealing with your cable provider.
The only downfall is DirecTV Stream is still a relatively new service, and we cannot foresee the long term success of the service.
